Softwares reviews

My three softwares of choice are finger math of which my Math 205 teacher Carol showed us, and two thing from yourchildlearns.com.

Software Title: Letter Sounds

Grade/Age level: Preschool and Kindergarten

Subject area:English(letter sound recognition)

Platform: Mac and PC. Online as well. Needs a sound card and speakers to playand Adobe flash player 8 .

Purpose: With this software the child would be able to work without teacher assitance and learn at their level of letter sound recognition. The software picks three letters or letter combinations that the student is supposed to match pictures that are named by the software. Atfer correctly matching the picture to the letter the word is shown and spoken two more time. This software is easy to use and since it can be use online all that is needed is a link to it.

Software Title: Map Puzzles

Grade/Age level: 4 grade

Subject Area: Geography

Platform: Mac/PC/Online

Purpose: To teach children and test them over their knowledge of the 50 states and there capitals. The software helps children learn where the states are by testing to see if they will be able to find them on their own. It also colors the states so that the children can see the difference in the state once placed on the map. This tool can be use without teacher assistance, making a extra tool to help those student having problems. It also times the student to encourage the student to improve or can be used for a timed test.

Software Title:Finger Math

Grade/Age level: 3 - 5 grade

Subject Area:Multiplication (Math)

Platform: Two hand that can count

Purpose: To help children multiply using only their hands. Finger Math is helpful and easy to pick up, most children by fifth grade should be able to read the instructions without teachers assistance, but for younger grades it would be most help for the teacher to show the class this as a tool for easy multiplying. The 9 X Rule would be the area that I would find this technique to be most helpful. There were other places I found videos to show this method but the sites were more then a little bit questionable for use in educating. In fact, those site maybe blocked by the schools and for good reason! Metacafe was one of the worst sites that I found, it had some very inappropriate material on it.

Excellent reviews! I appreciate your thorough coverage of such essential elements as sound cards, speakers, etc. The more information you provide, the more useful the reviews are to others.

I loved the Finger Math site--it looks like a great resource for learning math tricks and skills that will help you even when you're not at your computer. In a few cases I felt like I wanted more explanation of why some of the tricks worked, but at least they worked.

I tried to check out finger math but was unsuccessful. Actually the only one i was able to check out was the letter sounds one. That one was pretty cool I checked out the site and showed it to my child's pre-school teacher. It looks like a good site although I am not sure that I would want to use it as a tool for the kids to use independently.
